Cold Weather Car Tips

Believe it or not your car doesn’t enjoy cold weather just as much as you. Here are some great tips to keep your car running well in frigid artic temperatures:

Battery. Check your battery often. The battery should be replaced every three years based on amount of travel. You can have a mechanic check the battery and make sure the spark plugs are replaced. If there is corrosion around your battery- it is best to clean this off. It is easiest to clean with baking soda, water and a toothbrush.

Serpentine Belt. Check the wear of your serpentine belt. If the belt shows cracks and wear, it is best to change the belt so the old one doesn’t snap in extreme cold temperatures.

Antifreeze. Make sure your antifreeze is kept full. It might be a good idea to have it flushed if it has been a few years. Tip: Do not mix antifreeze colors.

Oil. During winter is it better to pick an oil with lower viscosity. The first number is for low temperatures, so it is better to pick a 5W-20 or 30 than a 10W-30 during winter months.

Lock Freeze. To prevent your locks from freezing you can spray WD-40 into the creases of your locks. It’s also a great idea to buy deicer to keep in your car for emergencies.

Don’t let the cold get you down! With a little TLC to your car you can have just as much fun in winter as summer.
